    File Format Conversion
The typical pattern is that you can do a free upload and get a link to download a converted file, but if you are one of the hoi polloi don't plan to do this on deadline. If you want fast, you pay -- and you pay quite a bit.
Mediaconverter.org: Claims to be the fastest conversion site on the Web. I uploaded a 4 mb .mov and said convert it to .wmv. Five hours later it was still chugging along. Maybe I hit it at a bad time. If you want the faster service and online storaged, prices as of mid-2009 were from $4 a week to $150 a year.
Zamzar.com: Will convert about anything to any other compatible format. I uploaded that 4 mb .mov file to convert to .avi. About 40 minutes later I had an e-mail with a link to the converted file, which worked fine. If you want the valet service, pricing is from $7 to $49 a month.

Tube and some other online services (though after You Tube, it can be a crap shoot)Vimeo and convert the .flv file intoit to an .aviFLV or a .mov. The online version can be slow. IMP4 file.
    Note: We used to
recommend downloadingVixy, but you now must download the desktop converter -- much easier.
    For Windows
program instead of doing the conversion online, and the latest version has brought several online reports of adware/malware. (2014)
    Print Screen:
Gadwin Print Screen: One of the coolest little utilities I've found (both freeware and a paid version). This gives Windows users the utility that MAC has built into "Grab." The program allows you to define part of a screen and take a screen shot, as well as a full window or a full screen. It outputs in JPG and other formats, not just the dreaded BMP. http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/

Netvibes: This allows you to create multiple pages, much like this Wiki, so you can have one for blog feeds, one for news feeds, etc. It also has other widgets such as a to-do list and the ability to file Twitter (see the Web Sites page for more on that service) and Facebook directly from Netvibes.
Bloglines: One of the original online RSS readers. Not as functional as Netvibes, but it has a less-complicated interface and allows you to save posts.
Google Reader: If you already have a Google account, you have access to this. The nice thing about Reader is that it also allows you to "republish" selected posts -- the ones you find most interesting -- to another Google page to which you can direct your friends or which you can scrape to create your own "feed of feeds."
As you might guess, we use all three for their various strengths.

    {PCJcover_w.jpg}{PCJ2cover.jpg} Welcome to
The 2nd edition includes includes all new chapters on social media and the business of convergent journalism, as well as significant updating throughout. But among the things we have retained are the valued writing examples and planning documents.
On the Resources page here you'll find some documents that may be of help, some of which are referenced in the book. Included is a copy of the "Fisher grid" for planning a cross-media story so that you can make multiple copies. The Blogs area has links to some of the leading blogs on the topic. The Web Sites area will direct you to individual blog posts and other sites that we have found very helpful over the years. And the Reviews section will direct you to others' comment -- positive and negative -- on the book and our explanations or responses as appropriate. (We certainly want your suggestions, so please leave a comment.)

    Dimensions of Content
This JPG file, which is suitable for use in a PowerPoint or other presentation provides a visual representation of the progression of old "linear" media to new "open" media. It's a good starting point for discussion with students of how "open" they think a news organization should be.dimensonsofcontent.jpg
